Phenome Centre Birmingham

Phenome Centre Birmingham was established in 2015 as part of an £8M award from the MRC, and offers a complete collaborative service to academic, industry, and government partners, providing expertise and advice in metabolic phenotyping studies from conception and experimental design through data acquisition to data analysis and biological interpretation. The objective of the collaborative research with our partners is to improve our mechanistic understanding of human health, disease, ageing, and any adverse effects from exposures to drugs and other chemicals. The centre houses eleven UPLC-MS and two 600MHz NMR spectrometers and is staffed by three Directors (Prof. Mark Viant, Prof. Warwick Dunn and Dr Ralf Weber), an Operations Manager, four laboratory-based post-doctoral level scientists and two bioinformaticians.

Birmingham Metabolomics Training Centre

The Birmingham Metabolomics Training Centre (BMTC) was established to provide training to empower the next generation of metabolomics researchers. The portfolio of courses provided by the BMTC has been driven by a training needs analysis of the metabolomics community performed in 2015. Both intensive face-to-face and online vocational courses are offered through the centre, spanning analytical chemistry through to computational methodologies at introductory to advanced levels. Training is provided in partnership with two major scientific instrument companies (Thermo Fisher Scientific and Waters) who provide state-of-the-art analytical equipment and software, used across the 6 weeks of face-to-face courses operated each year. BMTC trains hundreds of delegates each year across academia, industry and government institutions.
